KATIA

Fictionized rendering of the love story of Katharina Dolgoruki and the Czar Alexander II of Russia. Based on letters written by Katia to her governess. The Czar was fascinated with her when she was only thirteen, a forthright, capricious little girl, inordinately warm-hearted and loyal. He watches her through school, makes her his mistress when she is seventeen, fights the resistance of the Court and his ailing empress, fathers her two children, and -- after his wife's death -- marries her, only to be assassinated a week before she is proclaimed Empress. The material affords greater opportunities for a romantic story than here emerge. In the telling it is over-simplified, almost molded into the fairy tale pattern.
