The adventures of Uncle (1966--p. 56, J-22) continue as the benevolent elephant dictator explores his own castle further. The fish-frying academy, Lost Clinkers (a deserted gasworks) and the Sinking Parade are only a few of the tourist attractions the hefty ruler discovers in his enormous multi-level home. Uncle is attended by a group of diverse but indistinguishable animals, and opposed by some slimy characters residing at Badfort who do their best to humiliate, harm and give a bad press to Uncle throughout the book. The outsized concern with money and the unrelieved juxtaposition of all-good vs. all-bad, dull the texture of this sometimes amusing, usually colorless episodic chronicle. Whimsey attempted; stodginess achieved.
