STRIKE THREE YOU'RE DEAD

Rosen (Psychobabble) makes a dandy fiction debut here--with a baseball whodunit about the newly franchised, barely mediocre Providence Jewels, managed by Felix Shaloub (who gets plenty of input from his PR-hotshot wife Frances). The murder victim? Relief pitcher Rudy Furth, whose body is found in the clubhouse one morning, $1000 bills in his pocket. But Detective Linderman seems to be going nowhere with his investigation. So Rudy's roommate Harvey Blissberg, a Jewish center-fielder with a college education and a tendency toward introspection, works on some ideas of his own. And Harvey gets crucial detection help from his brother Norm (a stats fiend) and his TV-sportscaster girlfriend Mickey Slavin. Fresh and feisty: a triple-homer for baseball/mystery fans. . . and no strikeout even for those ignorant of the game.
