WITH GALL AND HONEY

A splendid love story follows a relatively simple course but is very much alive- a kind of crackling intensity surrounds the people, places and sights and sounds of Israel, and the excitement of being in a new, diverse country, full of danger, friends and hard work. Andrea, 18, is on a tour to Israel. A drifter, quick, lonely, but independent,- choosy about men and yet attractive to them, she meets Luis Manuel, big, vital, humorous, a Venezuelan. They are together throughout almost all the rest of the book. Andrea leaves the tour in Jerusalem, and moves in with Luis. She has met an old admirer of her mother's who wants to ""protect"" her, and while warily accepting his friendship, she learns to see the difference between a shadowy, idealized love and its reality. She follows Luis to a kibbutz, becomes pregnant, leaves him because she can't stand kibbutz life, and is about to return when she finds that Louis has joined the war against Egypt. Louis is killed, and Andrea learns to go on alone... A first novel has an exceptional vitality, so that one is quite willing to accept -with Andrea that so brief but full a love is enough to make a life- or a country.
