Here are sixteen short fantasies of ""mean men and secret places"" by a writer whose quirky, humane perceptions are sometimes unsettling, often delightful. The mean men include among others George Gnevi, whose adrenalin is an elixir vitae for androids until the day he stops getting angry; the Great Zambesi, who is a greater magician than he knows; Juniper Tell, the tycoon who wills a mechanical vampire to a business rival. The secret places include a floating island made of limestone; Boomer Flats, where the missing links are found; a Garden of Eden with a human serpent; Wreckville, home of the children of one of Adam's brothers, who are not subject to the curse of having to work for a living. These often go deeper than whimsy.
