PATTY REED'S DOLL

Based on actual happenings in the fateful Donner crossing of the R in 1846, this is an unpretentious and smoothly written story told through the eyes of a small wooden doll who travelled from Illinois to California in young Fatty Reed's pocket. As the party spends its first successful weeks out of Independence the life of a Conestoga wagon train is told with gaiety and accuracy. When tragedy strikes, first in the form of a mortal fight between Mr. Reed and an unruly driven and then in the dreadful winter, the narrative's dignity is maintained to give youngsters a stable, exciting account.
