JULIA ANN

This is fictional biography; the subject, Julia Ann Hieronymous Tevis, a feminist contemporary with Emma Willard and Mary Lyon. Less renowned than these fellow educators, Julia undoubtedly had a more interesting and tempestuous life. Born in Kentucky in 1799, she spent her girlhood in Washington, a member of a large and socially prominent family. She finally renounced soirees and dances to marry John Tevis, a Methodist circuit rider, and to establish the Science Hill Academy for girls in Shelbyville, Kentucky. More of an adult than a junior book, this will nevertheless be of special interest to career-minded girls. Beautifully written.
