THE CURIOUS FAUN

Another gentle fable from the Finnish author and illustrator of Mister King (1987). The joyous fauns, who live in an idyllic northern forest, can no longer be seen by their human neighbors--who dwell in ugly tenements and range from earnest and careworn to wicked. Then one dauntless faun visits the humans, reforms an angry man by giving him happy dreams, visits two foolish pedants who don't believe in him, and finally finds a man wise enough to see him: he has a childlike curiosity and knows the value of stories. Taina's skillful, imaginative watercolors lend subtlety and a touch of satirical humor to the rather purposive text. Unusual; nice.
