WAYS THAT ARE DARK

The MOTHER INDIA of China -- a book that debunks the sentimental picture of China, and leaves us chiefly relief that half a world is between us. The author -- formerly American vice- consul of Shanghai and Foochow -- takes off the lid and shows us one fifth of the world's population, wallowing in ignorance and filth and staggering misery, from which their so-called leaders and western civilization -- particularly the missionaries -- are equally powerless to rescue them. Political, social, economic and human elements combine against them -- and their worst enemy is the Chinese character, on which civilization for the masses has made no impress.
