ETRUSCAN ART

Etruscan painting, rich, sensual, and pagan, has only in recent years achieved a position of first magnitude in the hierarchy of connoisseur's appreciation. In this luxury volume, Raymond Bloch traces the Oriental and Classical influences which are manifest in Etruscan work. A scholarly sense of history and events combine here with a vigorous aesthetic appreciation of this unique and peculiarly timely style, lending comprehensibility to the 100 superbly reproduced illustrations, 71 of which appear in full color. To a large extent a funebral school, richly decorative, dramatic, the Etruscan geography extended between the Tiber and the Arno, its history spanning the five hundred years prior to the birth of Christ. In the archaic smile of its women, its intense portrayal of body and movement, modern poets and painters find a wealth of sensation with which to imbue their own work. A basic text for all libraries, a handsome gift book for the art enthusiast, amateur or professional.
