All of the Ditmars' books succeed in making science and scientists more alive than any other books in allied fields. This is more directly autobiography than most of his, for he goes back to the steps by which he became a scientist; the breadth of his scientific curiosity, from boyhood, his first museum job, and his subsequent experiences along various lines. Snakes, yes -- but his enthusiasm included the inner workings of a motor car, weather, bacteriology, monkeys, bats and so on. Good entertainment and made to order for older boys as well.
