The aftermath of the murder of a Mr. Booker, the head of a London firm of surveyors, is told by his accountant and through the eyes of his friendship for Grant Hoathly, Booker's assistant, who disliked the dead man thoroughly. Grant's cool charm is particularly effective with women- but it is Nadia, his girl at the moment of Booker's death, who makes the first break in his immune alibi. Grant, who has meanwhile become the head of the firm- at a substantial profit-, suggests that a private detective be hired to carry the investigation further than the Yard has done. And he ends up under arrest- and on trial for his life; the evidence is circumstantial and highly prejudicial; he is acquitted, and only then does he upset the verdict with a confession... Mr. Kruger is a scrupulous recorder and his spectacle of the august drama of justice in the courts is a controlled and highly proficient performance.
