SHAKESPEARE AND HIS BETTERS

This book is a scholarly and fair-minded study and resume of the age-old charges that Shakespeare's plays were written by someone else. Mr. Churchill, without prejudice, considers it seriatim, historically, geographically, and isolates all the main contenders- Bacon, Raleigh, Essex, Cecil, Marlowe, Queen Elizabeth, etc., etc. with moderation and impartiality. In the end, his verdict is a negative one- deciding against those who claim that there was no Shakespeare. He rests his argument primarily on style, but during the whole consideration of the subject he brings up many interesting and odd bits of literary history. . . For a special, largely scholarly market, a sound study with amusing sidelights.
