by Rebecca West ‧ RELEASE DATE: April 7, 1933
An interesting addition to the Appleton Biographies is this scholarly and admirable study of the life of St. Augustine. Miss West makes him out a very human sort of person, not altogether likeable, somewhat of an opportunist, very definitely a product of his times. The background and the conflicts of thought which characterized the period are made so vital as to seem almost contemporaneous. Psychoanalists would revel in the opportunity opened for psychological explanation of his conversion. Good library material for public libraries and schools, but unlikely to have a wide general sale.
