Dr. Dally, who is British (the derivation of this book), claims that many ""highly intelligent and educated people do not know what the word 'medicine' means or what a 'physician really is.'"" In this day and age? This is intended to explain ""the subject of general medicine to the general reader"" but since the explanations are summary, it falls somewhere between a dictionary and a handbook, somewhat on a par with Fishbein's Handy Home Medical Adviser & Encyclopedia. What she says is quite sound (avoiding for the most part specific treatment) and the material is organized under general categories (Digestion, Glands, Nutrition, The Skin, etc.) although psychiatry is quite skimpily treated and there is virtually nothing about conception and contraception. Its utility seems somewhat limited.
