THE MYSTERY COTTAGE IN LEFT FIELD

Why does wistful, generous newcomer ""Meeses Mmm-mo--Giordano"" have no visitors but the plainclothesman who delivers her groceries every Tuesday night? Why does beautiful, friendly new librarian Bessie Worthington gobble up news of Mrs. Giordano--and never invite twelve-year-old narrator Jimmy in? Figuring it out is as easy as adding one and one: Mrs. M/G is the mother of missing getawaycar driver Evo Montella, Miss W is his girlfriend, and they're both wanted by ""the state's foremost gangster"" (in the author's stiff-necked words) Early Winters--who of course wants to wip out Evo. Who, once spotted by Jimmy in Miss W's fireplace, nobly turns himself in. The setting is a 1929 Providence, R.I., neighborhood buzzing with talk of the St. Valentine's Day massacre, and that authentic undercurrent is about all this lumbering book has going for it.
