TRICKS: 25 Encounters

The international erotic adventures of a homosexual French novelist--not ""tricks"" in the prostitution sense, just deliberately casual encounters reported in dull, breathless detail. Camus dotes on every nuance of his conquests: how, for example, he spotted this boy with a very hairy chest in his favorite Parisian bar (Lc Manhattan), followed him up and down stairs, glanced over but was momentarily rebuffed--only to have his chosen one brush up against him deliberately. Typically, the couple dance, leave together, and set a location for their tryst (Camus has a roommate, but, we are told each time, also has access to a small maid's room in a walk-up apartment). And the dialogue generally revolves around the best places to ""cruise"" someone, at least until the bed scenes--which are then preoccupied with matters of anatomy and method. Sometimes Camus branches out a bit: he does manage to cruise motorcyclists in bushes and a cowboy-type in New York. But the sameness of the routine makes for pretty dull, thoroughly dank reading.
