GRISHKA AND THE BEAR

A warm and original animal-cum-boy story with unusual elements and unusual background. In far northern Siberia, Orsok is accused of angering the bears and is exiled for a year. His son, left behind, awaits the end of his father's exile and in the interlude befriends a young bear, who returns his aid with devotion. Then the natives decide to sacrifice the animal. Grishka, in attempting to save him, is himself injured, and only the intervention of the bear, at the risk of his own life, saves him as he takes leave of him to go back to his own. A strong story line here, and a poignant and convincing sense of loyalty between a human and an animal of the wilds, characterize this tale set against the background of the North.
