There will be twelve volumes in this excellent series of books. Written in simple language for a general audience, the books are effectively designed and illustrated to encourage reading. The aim is to deal with Catholic belief and practice, art, history from ancient times to the present, and great figures of the Church in a way that will supplement lesser treatments. The first four books are now available. In Preparing the Way, E. M. Odell studies the Old Testament, as a work of divine revelation, profound faith and highest art. Aloysius G. Mullins, O. P., is author of the second volume which describes the New Testament (The Dead Sea Scrolls and the ""false gospels"" are an interesting feature) and its meaning to mankind. The Story of the Church is featured in the subsequent volume by Gordon Albion who also collaborates with Robert Nowell in writing The Church in the Modern World. Subjects to be covered in the remaining volumes are Great Saints and Saintly Figures, the Organization of the Church, the Doctrinal Teaching of the Church, the Moral and Social Teaching of the Church, the Worship of the Church, the Building of the Church, the Art of the Church and a Dictionary-Index. The publisher of the Twentieth Century Encyclopedia For Catholics is to be commended for sponsoring this New Library -- a handsome and useful contribution to the promotion of better understanding of Catholicism.
