The Rise of Father Roland"", the Rev. William L. Doty's new novel, chronicles the fictional career of a diocesan priest from ordination until he becomes a Monsignor over twenty five years later. Upon reflection Father Roland decides that these years have been, ""on the whole routine and unexceptional."" Readers, with the stamina to follow Father Roland through a series of hackneyed adventures, won't quite agree as they watch him act as a ""go between"" in a kidnapping; resolve the problems of juvenile delinquents involved in murder; discover a Russian spy; almost lose his life as a Chaplain in Africa; handle radical Catholic Action leaders; and finally see him revitalize his own parish both spiritually and financially. Fans of Father Doty may enjoy this book as much as they did his earlier novels. Most discriminating readers, however, will dismiss it as impossible and improbable.
