Disaster strikes the first civilian space shuttle in this mindless near-future jaunt: shuttle Titan, with a load of VIP types aboard, loses power to one engine during the ascent. Contrary to orders from Houston to abort the mission, the pilots try to attain orbit. Some heat-shielding tiles drop off. Poisonous fumes leak into the passenger compartment. A female astronaut gets trapped, then is rescued off-stage. But Titan manages to rendezvous with the European orbiting Spacelab, whence the women and children are safely transferred--though several particularly belligerent, thick-headed male VIPs blow themselves into space in the process. And finally, serenaded by tearful friends and relatives back on the ground, the damaged shuttle crashlands in Mexico. A cardboard cast of thousands, choppy narration, unpersuasive science: spaceship action at its most clichÉd and unexciting.
