THE WIND AND THE RAIN

More Miracles by children, here in a setting for children: from his earlier anthology of children's verse and other sources, Mr. Lewis has selected twenty-three sharp, fresh responses to the sensory world, and, in tandem with photographer Buttfield, created a beautiful, insinuating book. The photographs do not so much exemplify the images as extend them, although the range from matching (the ""wrinkles (that) run down the pool"" do) to something more, or less, is broad. The ultimate test, of course, is the reaction of children to the format: certainly the poems are worth reading for their own sakes, apart from the potential inspiration of their authorship; certainly the photographs are stunning metaphors (rather than nature studies). Only trying can tell, with the hope that youngsters of the appropriate age won't be put off by the picture book appearance.
