The section on computers, for example, provides an unusually clear yet substantially detailed account of the ""anatomy of a computer,"" thoughtful explorations of computer chip technology, mass storage systems, and supercomputers, a concise history and explanation of artificial intelligence, and a survey of the application of computers to manufacturing and business. The contributions are remarkably fresh; the section on physics, for instance, includes discussion of the very recent controversy over room-temperature cold-fusion experiments at the Univ. of Utah. An excellent resource and primer, as useful for businesspeople--with its levelheaded briefings on practical applications of research breakthroughs--as for the general reader, the book drives its many points home with 75 b&w photographs.
