This doctor -- in the series -- is Gaston Grimsdyke whose heart is not in the profession but whose circumstances keep him there. With his cousin Miles scrubbing for a vacancy on the surgical consultant staff of St. Swithin's in London it is all to the good that Gaston heads for the hinterlands. But there the local medico and his wife provide too many women and Gaston imports a bit actress to impersonate a wife; the next jump gives Gaston a chance to save a wealthy man from death by a dependent heir and then to keep him alive when the exact terms of the will are known. With his patient married to the young nurse, Gaston is next offered a fling on the Continent and with an exile in Brazil and the success of the book he has written -- Gaston gathers in the sheaves. With a bow to the master -- Wodehouse -- this flits flightily.
