Life is complicated enough when a title is changed from English publication to American; when the author undergoes a metamorphisis, it is even more confusing. This is Eric Knight, under an American pseudonym, probably because he has taken on a new cloak and joined the hard-boiled school. Crazy as to characters -- crazy as to events, and with an ending that is almost straight Cain. In spite of its madness, and unreality, and unpleasantness, this story of a bounder who can't lose, until the plot laid to kill the woman he lives with, kills instead the woman he loves, somehow holds the reader, and occasionally moves one. 'Ware your conservatives -- it's not for them (or public libraries).
