Life on the Mississippi from contemporary diaries of Maude Rittenhouse, from 1881 to 1895. Cairo and its school, then social life, floods, beaux, clothes, W.C.T.U., travel, community entertainments, studying art, teaching at home, writing stories, engagement to the ever-present Elmer, prize -- winning story and finally marriage -- but not to Elmer, make up Maude's life from 16 to 30, and provide a naive, bulkily overwhelming record of her daily life. Frankness gives it charm and the weighing of her emotional love affairs provide plenty of romantic interest. There are not truly great moments, but plenty of peripatetic entertainment for the leisurely reader. A pleasant period piece.
