The seventh busy outing for Britain's sardonic secret agent Philis--and a distinct improvement over #6 (the murky One Good Death Deserves Another, 1977). This time Philis is assigned to help a Polish bishop defect from East Berlin; but he's caught and jailed by his old KGB nemesis Petrov, who has some shocking news for Philis: the defecting bishop is actually a homosexual Nazi war criminal (now in league with German terrorists) who is really going West to unbury a fortune in stolen, hidden (in Italy) WW II gold! Petrov proposes a KGB/British team effort to follow the bishop and seize the gold. So Philis winds up in Switzerland and Italy, aided by a KGB beauty, tracking the terrorists and the bishop to the buried treasure near Bologna. Some gore, a little impersonal sex (Philis' technique for winning over a terrorist teen moll), and Philis' brisk, meeting narration--a passable alternative to re-reading the James Bond shelf.
