YANKEE STOREKEEPER

A tale of shrowed Yankee bargaining, a Maine storekeeper who traded successfully with high pressure salesmen and on the side was local cooking instructor, night-school teacher, and undertaker. With a parental heritage of horse swopping and a ""mean disposition"" in regard to credit, he had the native equipment to turning everything to profit,- surprise package sales, blending his own tea, tobacco or stook feeds, or homely rhyming advertisements. His store was the congunic center of the community, almost replacing the bank, until he retired to a tapered-off grossry trade and the wholesale gas and wood business. Fascinating reading for anyone interested in folk ways-vigorous portrait of a tight-fieted Down Easter.
