Until recently an editor of the New York Times and author of several autobiographical works, Robert Duffus here shares thoughts on retirement and his conviction that travel is a vital factor in continued widening of horizons, self education and postponement of settling down to old age. He makes almost no attempt to write a travel book, but as one reads one shares with him and his ""companionable wife"" (and one might and competent) their adventures in Europe and the Near East. There are small incidents; there are profiles of people encountered and observed; there are adventures and misadventures (a coronary put Mr. Duffus briefly into an Athens hospital); there are glimpses of places they stayed- varying from pensions to a very occasional luxury hotel; there are ways of traveling by ship, train, car, sometimes by plane. But chiefly the book gives one a glimpse of what travel brings out in a viewpoint toward retirement, relevant comments on other aspects, the limitations, liabilities and assets. There are a few, very few, practical considerations (financial, language problems, health). There is no set continuity; this is rather a semi-chronological series of pieces of varying interest but consitent enthusiasm.
