This is a thorough and knowledgeable introduction to the history of books as well as a discussion of their publication and distribution. The first half of the brisk text follows the development of writing from the days of the Egyptians through the invention and refinement of the printing press to the growth of the book trade up to modern times. The second half is devoted to an explanation of the general processes of publishing: choosing the book, designing it, making it and marketing it. (As an illustration of how complete the book is, the role of the book reviewer and the reasons for the existence of review media are included, and even adult books are inclined to bypass this function.) Libraries and bookstores are given a character each. The revolution in the economy, manufacture and promotion of books created by the widespread and still growing paperback industry is outlined.
