Ensign Amos Wainwright gets more than he bargained for when his request for sea duty lands him below decks in a Polynesian copra boat run by a Japanese skipper whose connection with the United States Navy has to be taken on faith. Worse, his companions are fellow non-graduates of a Navy demolition school -- sent on this sensitive mission to a mined Japanese harbor because of a personnel snafu. You can fairly hear the movie cameras grinding as this misguided mission shapes up for the dramatic ending and the author of Up Periscope and Torpedo Run juices up the mixture of uniformed humor and action with lots of inside dope on the demolition trade.
