You don't have to be a beginning reader or a budding icthyologist to be beguiled by this gently precise seahorse floating against a striated bluish gray undersea background. The tiny fish's upright locomotion from seaweed to seaweed in the Sargasso Sea, his escape from a giant amberjack, his feeding on shrimp larvae and his meeting with a female are told in simple language enlivened by ear-catching sound effects (""CLICK! CLICK! CLICK! the seahorses in the eelgrass are looking for food. POOF! POOF! POOF! The seahorses are sucking in tiny animals.""), but it's Lobel's elegantly understated miniatures that make each predictable seahorse activity a visual adventure.
