The Bible student who will faithfully use this book as an aid to his study will find that a rich tapestry of God's purpose and action is gradually woven which includes himself as a necessary part of it all. Dr. Robert Denton, who teaches at the General Theological Seminary, New York, has written an extraordinarily useful guide to Bible study which cannot be too highly recommended to any who seek an introduction to the Bible. This introduction not only introduces us to its key chapters, but through a series of studies simply and artfully written relates the Old and the New Testament passages which provide relevant material for the topic under discussion. This series of topics deals first with the story the Bible tells of God's action in history beginning with the truth of the myth of the Garden of Eden, through Moses, the first to emerge as a true historical figure, through the days of the kings and prophets, and on into the story of Jesus of Nazareth who brought together in himself the unfolding purpose of God for his children. The next section of the book is a series of similar studies concerned with Christian doctrine, and part three the meaning of the history and doctrine in terms of human life as it is to be lived under God, -- now as in the beginning. These studies are Bible-centered all the way through, with the passages to be read designated before each study. Dr. Denton has performed a difficult feat with grace and distinction. One turns from his commentary book to the Bible with eagerness, anxious to see for himself that fuller meaning one has so often missed before.
