From ape, bear, and crocodile to x-ray fish, yak, and zebra, Crowther supplies a different cartoon animal for every letter of the alphabet--and lets it go at that, without further words or fuller pictures. The gimmick is that all the animals are hidden behind the plain black lower-case letters, and only appear after you pull a tab or lift the letter. But it's only a gimmick and, except for the owl whose eyelids open and close smartly as you pull, it's unelaborated even at that level. And needless to say such attachments as the coiled snake and protruding ibis beak won't weather much handling. A novelty that isn't very.
