An engaging account of South Seas living by one who successfully got away from it all. A Californian, trading took him into the South Seas -- and there he staged. His marriage, his four children, the death of his wife, on to his departure from his paradise with the four ""cowboys"", homeward bound after the war started -- this is an account of days of complete contentment, happy relations with the islanders, building his houses, baiting the local agent, sustaining his superiority as the only white man, the excitements of boat arrivals, the occasional trading activities, the gossip, local affairs, and Desire's perfection as a wife. With her death and the coming of war, he started for home, stopped off on Suvarrow and with the children led a Robinson Cruses existence, and finally miraculous escape when a hurricane almost obliterated the island. Good escape reading -- along the lines of Schenck's Come Unto These Yellow , but with a more authentic feel. Romance -- adventure -- atmosphere plus.
