by Robert E. Hood ‧ RELEASE DATE: July 1, 1974
In the Let's Go tradition, this is an attempt to combine the fun and excitement of a stock car race (in which ""your favorite driver, Gary"" is competing) with a painless expansion of vocabulary and arithmetic skills. To our mind, the black and white sketches and first-name-only drivers can't approach the immediacy of an actual televised race, and only an unusual kid would go on to work out the appended list of projects (""If there are three heats with twelve to eighteen cars in each. . .""). Hood does manage to pack some vivid imagery and crackling sound effects into his calling of the race, and for a certain readership, that alone will ignite sparks.
