ISSUES THAT DIVIDE THE CHURCH

This is the record of a marathon (day-and-a-half) conversation that took place in Kansas City early this year among seven representatives of this country's Catholic intelligentia: Robert Hoyt, publisher of National Catholic Reporter; Jacqueline Grennan, president of Webster College; Daniel Callahan of Commonweal; Andrew Greeley, the sociologist; George Shuster of the University of Notre Dame; L. Brent Bozell of Triumph magazine; and Archbishop Robert Dwyer of Portland, Oregon. It was a general conversation on current Church issues and touched on, and sometimes delved into, such topics as authority, birth control, the liturgy and developments in theology. There is a good deal of rambling, but a good many sparks are struck particularly by such firebrands as Mr. Callahan and Miss Grennan on one Side, and by the very conservative Mr. Bozell on the other. On the whole, this is an interesting and sometimes stimulating exchange, well worth the time of the intelligent Catholic reader.
