HYMNS IN THE LIVES OF MEN

The publication in this volume of the lectures delivered at Southwestern University will be welcomed by choir directors and the increasing number of clergymen who realize that the use of hyena in a service of worship demands a good deal of thought and reflects the clergyman's conception of the meaning of public worship. Dr. McCutchan is a distinguished hymnologist, the editor of the latest Methodist hymnal and the author of many books on the subject. He has been most influential in the movement to further the use of dignified reverential and meaningful hymns in our Protestant churches. In this volume traces the background of modern hymnology; the pagan sources, the psalms, chants, Greek and Latin hymns and particularly the more recent development of the hymns in England and America.
