HOW SPIDER SAVED VALENTINE'S DAY

Seasonal books are always a hit, and this one should prove a fun addition to Valentine's Day. Veteran author Kraus has spun a gentle, easy-to-read tale about a group of bugs who exhange Valentines in school. Hurrying on his way to the Public Bug School, Spider remembers to buy cards and candy for his classmates, Ladybug and Fly. During recess Spider shares his Valentine candy--small hearts that say ""KISS ME"" and ""COOL."" Two fuzzy caterpillars sit in the back of the room sleeping. Spider has forgotten to get them Valentine cards. What can he do? In a flash of sudden inspiration, he decorates Fly's wings with candy hearts, then paints himself all over with Ladybug's red lipstick. Since Ladybug is already red, she doesn't need a costume. The three, with the help of their teacher, Miss Quito, jump into the Valentine box and make a surprise appearance for the caterpillars. But they have their own surprise--they've woken from their sleep as purple and yellow butterflies! The happy ensemble gathers round Miss Quito, who plays a love song on the piano to complete the festivities. This story about sharing features cartoon-like drawings that enliven the text. Young readers will enjoy the vivid colors and the musing cast of characters.
