MILTON THE EARLY RISER

The Aruegos capture the mood of irrepresible hyperactivity as frame by frame the wakeful, doleful-eyed panda Milton does battle with the color TV set, juggles apples and literally sings up a storm -- and then hauls still sleeping animals back into place in an effort to clean up the mess he's made. But though their usual tropical lushness has been shaded into the blues and violets of a cool bamboo forest, this is chiefly another opportunity to admire the Aruegos' felicitous way with speckled snakes, self-satisfied crocodiles and uninhibited greenery. Milton is just enough of a ham to make it all work -- once again.
