A first novel, which concentrates with a sharp intensity on the decrescendo of the marriage of Danny O'Brien and Evelyn. Erratic, neurotic, Evelyn is the victim of a childhood insecurity, of a self-indulgence which shows no regard for others, even Danny, whose bad heart jeopardizes his life. Here, in retrospect, are the early days of marriage, the violent quarrels and the excitement of their atonement, Danny's first bad attack and Evelyn's jealousy of his mother; the breakup and reunion in Savannah, and strike two in New York; and finally Hollywood, with the hope of a child to offset Danny's conviction that Evelyn is losing her mind. The death of the child accomplishes the final breakdown....A taut, narrowed study of emotional distortion, involuntary, inescapable, which has a direct, communicable sympathy.
