Here, in retrospect, are the early days of marriage, the violent quarrels and the excitement of their atonement, Danny's first bad attack and Evelyn's jealousy of his mother; the breakup and reunion in Savannah, and strike two in New York; and finally Hollywood, with the hope of a child to offset Danny's conviction that Evelyn is losing her mind. The death of the child accomplishes the final breakdown....A taut, narrowed study of emotional distortion, involuntary, inescapable, which has a direct, communicable sympathy.
