One might define it as a volume which bears fair comparison with an O'Brien collection here, -- indicating trends, regional and national qualities, etc. Nine South American countries and Mexico are represented, some of them by two or more stories. For the special quality and variety the following are, perhaps, indicative:- Fiesta in November and The White Wind (Argentina); Don Goyo (Ecuador); Country Girl (Columbia); Pilgrimage (Chile). Social aspects, hacienda life, coffee plantation life, cattle harding, religious viewpoint, an outdoor, masculine world:- these are typical of the collection as a whole. The two editors are well versed in their subject, and Katherine Anne Porter has contributed an introduction, which stresses the differences between the Latin-American short story writers and those of the USA.
