Dub him the spy who came in from the Ginza--that's Harry Calder, a Tokyo-based CIA financial analyst using a GAO cover. Assigned to investigate a Commerce Department negotiator friend who's being blackmailed by hot-pantsy Hannah, Calder is soon sandbagged by the agency in order to break up some crucial trade talks with Japan. A disillusioned moralist with ""feelings,"" he's brainwashed and about to be liquidated before he collects enough wits to escape. The heavy economic conspiracy here--a clever plan to bankrupt Japan by nationalizing their holdings in the U.S.--is Nipped in the bud with the miraculous discovery of the gold reserves which disappeared at the end of WW II. A riveting suspense story--this protagonist at his operative best is anything but a throwaway.
