by Robert Ludlum ‧ RELEASE DATE: April 25, 1973
Robert Ludlum (The Scarlatti Inheritance; The Osterman Weekend) writes better and better albeit more and more brutal action jammed stories which pick up momentum as they metastasize all over the lot, in this case veering off a New England college campus which seems to be the base of a large narcotics operation extending into gambling, prostitution, etc. James Matlock, a teacher there, is recruited by the Justice Department in spite of the fact that he's classified ""flawed but mobile in the extreme"" and he's working in tandem with the authorities until his girl is raped and hideously mutilated. From then on he's on his own moving to find the man behind the organization, Nimrod, and a piece of paper which will prove to be the diary of a campus gray eminence. A 110% story all in overdrive, extortionately readable.
