ARCTIC VILLAGE

Armchair traveling for the man who wants to get away from business seems to have a northbound trend this season. There was TRUE NORTH by Elliott Merrick; there was ALASKANS ALL by Barrett Willoughby; and Knopf has just postponed until early Fall their HUNTERS OF THE NORTH by Helge Ingstad. Now comes ARCTIC VILLAGE, the Literary Guild selection for May. The ""village"" is Wiseman, on the Arctic frontier, and the author attempts to do for the Arctic what Stuart Chase succeeded so brilliantly in doing for Mexico. There is interesting sociological material in his book, and one gets a very clear understanding of the forces that give individuality to this unique frontier. But there is little of humor, or of color, or of drama in the picture he paints. In spite of the publicity the Guild selection will give it, I doubt the chance for popular success.
