First published in 1902 this has been a continuing best seller in Scotland and, making its first American appearance, will have its attraction for golfers here. A ghost story, combining farce and satire, is told by Major the Honorable John William Wentworth Gore, who asks for a match with golfing great, Jim Lindsay, the stakes to be the chance to propose to a wealthy American widow. Since Gore has never played, he heads for the links at St. Magnus determined to achieve a perfect game in the short time he has allowed. Sensing failure he takes the offer of ghostly Cardinal Smeaton to use the dead man's antediluvian clubs but decides against them on the first nine holes in which his ineptitude is more than ludicrous. During the lunch break he learns the magic of the clubs, makes bets, and, in the second nine plays without error. But his win has a triple edged ending which further shows up Gore's insufferable snobbery. An amusing conceit especially for devotees of the game.
