Once again the author tells a tale of a love so strong that it transcends time and reality. The narrator who resembles the author remembers Miranda ""of the elm colored hair"", a young divorcee who was his neighbor three years before. He would tell her of the golden springtime of the 1920's and in particular of Bee, a young poet who died in 1936. The last years of his life, Bee had been in love with a mysterious young woman whom he had met in Florence. Before long it becomes apparent that Miranda is that woman. She fell in love with Bee when the narrator had first talked about him. Bee's spirit comes to get her and she joins him. Sadly the narrator reads Bee's last letter from Zermatt telling of his new-found happiness. His fingers touch the yellowed newspaper clippings of June, 1936, describing Bee's fatal accident on the Matterhorn.... The magic formula as before, along with flickering literary reminiscences of the twenties and thirties, wearing rather thin now but still appealingly fragile.
