MR. TIBBS PASSES THROUGH

Neumann is already known in translation; this is his first novel in English, and one is now and again aware of this. The weakness of the book lies in its shapelessness, thinness, moments of obscurity. A tale of refugees who come to a scarcely credible English town and are absorbed, briefly, into the lives of the inhabitants, transmitting to them a certain unreality. Some nice parts -- but on the whole, unimportant.
