Mr. Elegant, mainly concerned until now with Far Eastern affairs, has based this long-winded historical novel on what he explains, in a forenote, to be a ""lost"" manuscript describing events taking place in the area around Kashmir in 100 B.C. (One takes such assertions on faith.) The state of Kamardol, Aryan with strains of Greek and Central Asian cultures, faced with religious and political sectarianism and a wavering dynasty, revives the curious Quest of the Sanctified Horse. Two kings, reigning together, agree to the Quest under the command of their brother, the warrior Harrap. Following the wanderings of the sanctified horse, believed to be the manifestation of the will of the Gods, the expedition is seen through the eyes of Yakir, a Brahmin and boyhood companion of Prince Harrap. The men overcome natural hardships, are diminished in number by skirmishes with Huns and other marauders, visit the cities of the Greeks and the Gaustinians and find their beliefs tested by the many religions and peoples. Returning at last, Harrap is killed by treachery (whose it is not certain); the remaining king is dispatched; and Yakir is proclaimed ruler. Not a great deal of stirring action for the route--a plethora of mongrel dialogue. (""A cool one, that Lieutenant""), and religious ruminations which never amount to much.
