SHADRACH IN THE FURNACE

This takes place in Silverberg's plague-decimated 2012 world governed from a vast citadel in Mongolia by an ancient monomaniac named Genghis II Mae IV Khan. Shadrach, an earnest young black doctor from Philadelphia, dutifully monitors the Chairman's health by means of a battery of recorders implanted in his own body while pondering the injustice of the policy which keeps the precious ""organ-rot"" antidote in the hands of a small elite. Silverberg can, be an inspired experimenter or competent journeyman--here, the latter.
